The IRS generally makes refund information available within 24 hours after it receives an e-filed current-year return, about 3 or 4 days after an e-filed prior-year return, and about 4 weeks after a paper return. Many e-filed refunds are issued within three weeks. Delays happen. Where's My Refund updates once a day and does not track amended returns.
- You will need the Social Security number or ITIN, filing status, and exact refund amount from the return. Enter those on IRS.gov, not here.
- Returns that claim the earned income credit or additional child tax credit are often held until mid-February by law.
- Identity checks, offsets for debts, and paper filing are common reasons a refund is later than the typical window.
